The Founding Fathers in London

Several of America’s Founding Fathers spent a lot of time in London, shaping their ideas and experiences that would later influence the formation of the United States.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the most famous Americans in London, lived here for nearly two decades. It was during his time in London that Franklin’s political views evolved, influenced by discussions in Whitehall and Covent Garden’s coffee houses.

John Adams, the second President of the United States, served as the first U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s in 1785. He lived in Mayfair and strived to stabilize relations between the two countries, even meeting with King George III in an encounter described as “not a disaster”.

East London and the Thames

The formation of America’s 13 colonies commenced in 1606 when English settlers embarked on their journey across the Atlantic. During my tour we will visit Blackwall and Rotherhithe, where ships like the iconic Mayflower set sail.

A visit to pretty Shad Thames offers a view of London’s maritime past, with cobbled streets and historic warehouses standing as reminders of the city’s role in shaping early America. It also reveals the birthplace of one of the founding fathers mother!

The phrase “special relationship” between the U.S. and UK is often used today, but as you will find out, its foundations were laid centuries ago.

The Birth of a Nation in West London

As America transitioned from colonies to an independent nation during the 1770s, we will head west to St James’ and Mayfair—areas rich with connections to this transformative period in history. One highlight is Benjamin Franklin House, where he lived for nearly 16 years before becoming a “reluctant revolutionary.” This Georgian townhouse is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

On to Mayfair, one of the most affluent districts of London, this area connects us nicely to where the ratification of the Treaty of Paris (1783) was signed, which formally ended the Revolutionary War and recognized American independence, a document partially negotiated by Franklin himself.

As we tour the streets of London in my Black Cab, we’ll visit these and other sites, bringing to life the connections between London and the birth of the United States. It’s a journey through time that never fails to captivate my American guests, revealing how inextricably linked our two countries are.

Pick up can be arranged from any central London hotel or tube station, and drop off anywhere in central London.
